I find myself Deputy Publishing Director of Gollancz with no clear idea of how I got here but fairly sure I enjoyed the journey. There was some college, a lot of bookselling and a bit of marketing along the way but that was a long time ago. I’ve been editing since 1991. I’ve always read SF, Fantasy and Horror but I’ve always enjoyed reading other stuff as well. I’ve published other stuff too but never had as much fun doing it as I have publishing genre books. I’m very happy doing what I’m doing; to the extent that I’ve been comprehensively ruined for doing anything else. Anything else may have got off lightly. I’m definitely more Arthur Dent than I am Takeshi Kovacs. But then if anyone in publishing tells you they’re like Takeshi Kovacs they are LYING.

Adam Whitehead runs a blog called The Wertzone; justly famous for its fantastically in-depth analysis of various long running genre franchises, whether they be George R.R. Martin or Peter F. Hamilton, on television, in the cinema or on your computer in game form. Who better then than Adam to write about an underlying structure in the works of our very own Brandon Sanderson? We’re grateful to Adam for allowing us to run this piece on our blog.

I’m not very old but I sometimes feel that way. I first started reading fantasy in the mid to late 70s. And it’s hard now, even for me, to fully connect with just how little fantasy there was around. Well, fantasy as we recognize (and endlessly debate) the commercial genre now at any rate. Of course there were your Lovecrafts and your Dunsanys and your Leibers and your so ons and so forths but I … More

Jack Glass Cover Reveal

Gollancz Team: - February 2nd, 2012
Adam Roberts, Cover Art, Science Fiction

A supremely clever melding of golden-age crime themes with golden-age SF themes. A tricksy crime novel told in three stories. A who-dunnit where you know from the beginning who dunnit (that would be Jack Glass), but are still surprised when you discover how he did it. What on earth (or indeed off earth) would you put on the cover? Tried loads of ideas, nothing worked. Went back to the beginning. To the title. Jack Glass. The … More
