Steelheart is here!
To celebrate the UK publication of Steelheart we asked Brandon Sanderson to write us a special message to his UK fans.
Steelheart started as a simple “what if?” I was on the road on book tour, driving a rental car up the East Coast. I was running late to meet my editor in Pittsburgh. My phone was dead—I’d forgotten my charger—and was rushing along, when someone aggressively cut me off in traffic. I got very annoyed at this person, which is not something I normally do. I’m usually pretty easygoing, but this time I thought to myself, “Well, random person, it’s a good thing I don’t have super powers—because if I did, I’d totally blow your car off the road.” Then I thought: “That’s horrifying that I would even think of doing that to a random stranger!”
Quickly as that, a book began.
Any time that I get horrified like that makes me realize that there’s a story there somewhere. So I spent the rest of the drive thinking about what would really happen if I had super powers. Would I go out and be a hero, or would I just start doing whatever I wanted to? Would it be a good thing or a bad thing?
What would we do if people started developing amazing powers—but instead of some being heroes like in the movies, every single person who got the powers was evil? What if governments couldn’t contain them, and laws didn’t apply to them? Would you give in to their rule? Or would you fight?
Steelheart is that story. The story of near-gods and an ordinary young man who chooses to fight back with nothing more than hope and tenacity.
This may not be what you expect to see from me because I’ve primarily released epic fantasy so far. As a writer, one of my main goals is to always be trying new things to advance my writing skill and to make sure that you have a varied experience reading my books. If you’ve enjoyed my books, particularly the ones like Mistborn, and you pick up this, you’ll find lots of things to love. But you’ll also find some new things. Steelheart is an action adventure thrill ride. I wrote it to be exciting, fast-paced, and fun. It is my experimentation of dabbling more in science fiction than fantasy, and dealing with some of the current tropes in action movies, particularly some of the superhero tropes. In the end, however, it is very much a Brandon Sanderson novel. So I hope you will enjoy my individual take on the technology of this world and the behind-the-scenes lore and magic. I hope you will also look forward to what I think is an explosive, powerful ending. Please give Steelheart a look. You won’t be disappointed.
