X-Men: Days of Future Past Review

Our new Marketing Assistant Harriet went to see X-Men: Days of Future Past over the weekend. A long time fan of the X-Men films (she called her first pet Storm), here’s what she thought.

So this weekend I went to see X-Men: Days of Future Past. The premise of the film is that Wolverine is sent back in time to hang out with young Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Xavier (James McAvoy) to stop the plans of mutant-hating scientist Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage). Trask created mutant-slaying robots called Sentinels back in the 1970s which are now attacking the quickly diminishing mutant community. Once you get over the whole action-taking-place-in-two-parallel-times thing (and basically don’t question anything time-related too much) this is a thoroughly enjoyable X-Men film!

The 1970s sees Professor Xavier played by James McAvoy, addicted to a drug that allows him to use his legs, and Magneto as a delightfully brooding Michael Fassbender, trapped in a special non-metal prison for killing JFK (who he was actually trying to save because, get this, he was a mutant!). And there are a LOT of 70’s brown leather jackets. And questionable shades. To unite the two estranged pals and get the mission underway, Wolverine and Xavier enlist the help of Quicksilver, who is basically a REALLY fast kid with goggles. He definitely steals the award for best bit in the film (and best fashion sense – I mean, check out those goggles). Faced with armed guards during the prison break, he plugs in his headphones and goes into speedy mode, casually rearranging the airborne bullets and the guards’ limbs in what is both a hilarious and very cool scene. Other good scenes include any in which Mystique/Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) is holding someone in a head lock using only her thigh, and Michael Fassbender wearing a fedora, which is really quite spectacular.

I had a great time watching this film. It has plenty of cool X-men action and a good love/hate bromance between young Magneto and Xavier. There are also some quite emotional moments between the present day Magneto and Xavier (Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart) who are now full-time best-buds again.  I’m sure the plot is full of holes and the ending made almost no sense to me, but I definitely thought this was a worthwhile watch and, really, who doesn’t love a bit of X-men over-the-top ridiculous stuff?

Oh, and did I mention Michael Fassbender is in it? Wearing a fedora?
